He run amok in the safe house, disturbing the kids … felt like he ceased to exist,
he was a decent fella but he needed a mate,
but he couldn’t accept love plagued by demons of hate.
These are the chilling lyrics in Northern TerrorStory by Hugh Winterflood, aka SkankMC from Alice Springs, which has been voted the 2013 NT Song of the Year People’s Choice.
It is a six-minute tale of the personal and social challenges faced by a boy in Government care.
The track is off SkankMC’s EP I’m Only Hugh Man and has received great feedback from general public and airplay on national stations including triple j, says a media release today from MusicNT.
Northern TerrorStory also won the Hip Hop Category of the NT Song of the Year.
SkankMC has built a strong following this year after playing large events such as the Perth Big Day Out, and support slots for big name artists including Draft and The Tongue.
Dom Alessio from triple j, who is in Alice Springs to support Central Australian musicians at the intune alice springs music conference, says: “Northern TerrorStory is a drama more than a song.
“SkankMC paints such a sad picture and you really get drawn in by the emotion.”
