Another day for living

p2131-Ruth-Apelt-1-660

A smiling acquaintance passing in the street, mother of boy child, a presence in community meetings, occasionally on stage with others and her guitar – this was all I knew of Ruth Apelt until I made the connection one day between her and her partner, and the sad fact that he was dead, too young. Last month Apelt told something of his, her, their story in a moving one-woman show. KIERAN FINNANE reviews.

Artists bring landscape into Alice Plaza

p2129-Ngurra-mural-Taylor

A mural in the Namatjira tradition will soon grace a wall inside the Alice Plaza and is bound to become a drawcard for art lovers and tourists. Work began yesterday with Ngurratjuta Many Hands artists Peter Taylor and Mervyn Rubuntja outlining the scaled-up forms of a landscape painted by Taylor. KIERAN FINNANE reports.

Ngurratjuta artists are the new owners of the Desert Park gift shop

A shot in the arm for the watercolour movement ... and chance for visitors to have contact with Aboriginal people

It's an opportunity that will surely be the envy of many: the Ngurratjuta art centre has bought the gift shop at the Alice Springs Desert Park. It will be used to exhibit and promote the work of its artists, and provide an income to their enterprise from its trade in the full line of gifts and souvenirs. The Desert Park is also keen to have the artists painting on site and this looks set to happen from late March next year, as the cooler weather arrives. KIERAN FINNANE reports.
