Only 30 residential blocks will be built in stage one of the new Kilgariff suburb south of The Gap, according to a well-informed source speaking on the condition of not being named.
And the developer will be the NT Government, following the collapse of talks with a private developer.
This is similar to the way the Federal government was developing suburbs in Alice Springs in the 1970s, prior to the Territory getting self-government.
The reduced scope of the suburb, planned to have some 1200 blocks when fully developed, is well short of the 100 blocks which the government said would be for sale “off the plan” by mid this year.
Industry sources are saying that there are concerns that economies of scale will be lost and the projects benefits to the town as an economic stimulus will be reduced.
