An average of six overseas and 7.4 domestic tourists a day visited the Megafauna museum in Todd Mall between October and March.

This compares with 20 locals.

The museum was opened by the NT Government’s Museum and Art Gallery at a cost of $1.5m in July last year.

The total visitor numbers between October and March, open daily except for two weeks over Christmas / New Year and Good Friday, was 5468: Overseas 975; Alice Springs 3279; domestic tourists 1214 with “NT other” (363), Victoria (229) and NSW (225) topping the list.

  1. Overseas 975; Alice Springs 3279; domestic tourists 1214 with “NT other” (363), Victoria (229) and NSW (225) topping the list.
How were those numbers are worked out?
[ED – They were supplied by the museum.]

  2. Erwin, a minor point, but when these large birds were first discovered a few years ago, they were referred to in the local press as the Ducks of Doom. Much better than Big Bird.

  3. Because I am very curious about all sorts of statistics I rang the museum and asked how those figures are created.
I was told: “We simply ask people if they are locals or visitors.”
Interesting, as I have never been asked.

  4. I’m curious about those statistics. I’ve been a few times now, by myself and with relatives visiting from out of town – not once have we ever been asked where we’re from.
