Bowlers in Streaky Bay – affectionately known as the beach suburb of Alice Springs – are issuing a challenge to the sport’s aficionados in The Centre, to compete in annual Whiting Carnival in the first week of May.

The invitation comes from the club’s patroness Rae Brewster who received an OAM in the recent Australia Day Honours.

Mrs Brewster says the matches will be played on the “beautiful artificial carpet in the brand new sporting complex servicing the fishing town bowls, football, netball, basketball cricket and tennis clubs.

“It has taken a couple of years to come to fruition but it is up and running,” she says.

“The bowling club, men and women, landscaped the area and assisted with the laying of the greens and numerous other jobs, a massive commitment by some very energetic members over many months.”

The bowls season started at the end of September with the “primitive but serviceable old club rooms” and have been enjoying the new club room since November.

She says the Whiting Carnival “is a great week of bowls with prizes galore. The caravan park is only five minutes walk away”.
