New courts: new building project for CBD

Alice Springs is to get new Supreme Court facilities, doubling in size from one courtroom to two, with the existing courthouse turned over entirely to the busy Magistrates Court.

Instead of the government building a new Supreme Court it will rent the space for the new courts from a developer via a long term lease.
The facilities will be state-of-the-art and accompanied by new chambers and space for support staff.

“The promise of a long-term foundation tenant will encourage a private developer to proceed with a significant new building project in the Alice Springs Justice Precinct,” according to Chief Minister Adam Giles.

The new facilities will go out to tender in March “but developers have already signalled an interest in this project,” says Justice Minister John Elferink.
