Authorities underrated risk to Pine Gap, Alice of a nuclear strike

 

In a new book, Project Rainfall,  well known author TOM GILLING  tells the story of Pine Gap from its genesis in the Cold War  to its modern role as a weapon in the American 'war on terror'. This extract focusses on the early 1980s, when the world was closer to nuclear war than at any time since the end of the Second World War, and on the risk to Australia from the presence of the so-called  ‘joint facilities’.
