The silly yellow rabbit at one end of the lane between the Supreme Court building and the post office now has competition at the other.
This creation, similar in height but vastly more impressive and thought provoking, appeared over the weekend, bolted to the ground.
Its components are car parts and some can be moved.
It’s somewhat reminiscent of Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly paintings except they are celebrating a bush ranger while this one, a seeming Robocop, honours our police – or does it?
UPDATE November 14.
A council spokesman said today: “As it was erected on Council land without a permit, it has been designated for removal. I am not sure on the timeline.”
Erwin,
Please keep us non-Alice Springs residents posted.
Will this “vastly more impressive and thought provoking” creation survive the reaction from those whose thoughts have been provoked?
Perhaps a weekly report on whether the brilliant conception is still upstanding.
Thanks.
Can enough requests to persuade that keeping Ned Kelly is worth being kept?
Council has removed the statue? Maybe it’s at the tip? Hopefully it returns, we need to take our anger out on something.
Reminds me of when in Yuendumu we painted over one of those Intervention “no Alcohol no Pornography” signs with “If you want porn, go to Canberra”. The blue sign had stood there for over a year when it was painted over.
It took only a day or so to remove it. When I went to the Shire office to complain and ask why it had been removed, I was told that our sign “might offend some people”. Never mind the offence caused to many people in our community by the blue sign.
If someone tells me where the sign is, I might be tempted to “steel” in and install it in front of our “acting” courthouse.
Oops!
I meant the Ned Kelly statue!
