Funding back for people responding to native title claims

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Sir – I welcome the Commonwealth Government’s funding commitment of $2.2million over two years to reinstate the Native Title Respondent Funding Scheme.

The funding will allow organisations to employ an officer to undertake work on native title matters, cover associated administrative costs, and provide legal representation.

Funding for the Scheme was cut under the former Federal Labor Government at the beginning of this year, and was subject to increased red tape and more restrictions.

The funding will enable pastoral respondents to continue to actively engage in resolution of native title claims over their pastoral estate, consistent with the co-ordinated approach between the Northern Territory Government, the Land Councils and Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association.

It is a big win for various local organisations, notably for the Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association which relies on this funding to help cover legal costs for their members.

John Elferink
Attorney-General
