Taxi disgrace: $24 fare Trucking Yards to CBD

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Sir – I drove an old man from Trucking Yard Town Camp (end of Smith Street) to Alice Plaza recently.

While we were driving along he said that the afternoon prior a taxi driver had charged him $24 for the same trip in the opposite direction (with no detours he made a point of mentioning).

Come on, taxi drivers, that is blatant racism and a disgrace – a review of your personal and professional ethics is in order!

  1. Not the first time I’ve heard stories like this. What about charging everyone in the car the meter price. That’s another trick of the trade.

  2. [Some – ED] taxi drivers are renowned for discrimination. In exactly the same way as your article does not state that the man was Aboriginal, neither do [some] taxi drivers state they will charge a black person $50 just for going from one side of the drive-through to the other. Why not ask the Aboriginal people about it when they are sitting quietly waiting for the drive-through to open at 2, or perhaps when they are trying to get their last drink from the Todd Tavern Drive Through just before 9?
Seriously this is not news, in any other place it would be, but its so rampant that is accepted behaviour by both the locals and [some] drivers. Perhaps the police need to impound more taxis to get the message across.

  3. Oh, and while I am at it, you should talk to [some – ED] taxi drivers about picking up on the yellow lines and disobeying the road rules and laws that just apparently do not apply to taxis simply because they are taxis.

  4. All fares should be by the meter plus flag fall.
Any moneys taken by drivers, who are not the owners, could be simply be pocketed, this should be considered to be stealing.
I wonder if the owners of the cabs are aware of the difference between the registered fare amounts (meter prices) and the amounts that are taken in cash.
After all the owners pay all of the costs of running the cabs, if they are not driving.
Is that the way it operates in Alice?
