Lowest number of August property crimes in four years

Alice Springs Police continue to crack down on property related crime, recording the lowest number of unlawful entries in August for the last four years, writes Leith Phillips, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant.

Alice asked to adopt 'community water rules'

"Community water rules" – does that sound like you're going to be told you can only water the garden twice a week or only use a bucket to wash your car? Not in Alice, not yet anyway. Alice Water Smart, a $15m project funded by the Australian Government, wants the town to formulate its own rules for using water more efficiently. But this won't force you to change your lifestyle and the rules will be voluntary, more a guide to maintain "what you've got" or get you "what you want to have", says project officer Liz Locksley. KIERAN FINNANE reports.

Alcohol sales in Alice dropped 12% between 2004 and 2011, but mail orders, online purchases not included

The total wholesale supply of liquor measured as pure alcohol has reduced in Alice Springs by 12% since 2004, according to figures from the NT Department of Justice.

The figures do not include alcohol obtained by mail orders or online purchases obtained from interstate which, according to anecdotal evidence, are increasingly popular.
The most significant drop was in the supply of wine casks and fortified wines, coinciding with sales restrictions and price increases.
