The freedom of the press still furnishes that check upon government which no constitution has ever been able to provide – Chicago Tribune.

For the record …

The photos in this story may end up being some of the last images of the trees and the sails that have been a part of this end of town for the last quarter century, and yet another chapter unfolds of the operation and interaction of business, bureaucracy and government in the Northern Territory. Town centre facelift would grind to a halt under Labor funding, says Mayor Ryan

Country Liberals suggest Labor "stuff-up": Traeger Park TV lights are already there.

Alice Springs will get only half as much as its Town Council asked for, and much later than expected.

This is the response by Mayor Damien Ryan to the campaign promises made by Chief Minister Paul Henderson last Friday.
Mayor Ryan says the council asked for $5m in 2012/13 to continue the town centre re-development, but will only get $2.5m, deferred and over two years, 2014 to 2016.
"It's pretty disappointing that the CBD doesn't rate before 2014-15 which is a long way away," says Mayor Ryan.
"You wouldn't be able to start stage two with that small a commitment. We need to have the money in place." ERWIN CHLANDA reports. PHOTO: Market last Sunday in Todd Mall. Funding as announced by the Chief Minister would curtail further progress on the long planned town centre upgrade.

Northern mall and Parsons Street get top priority in revamp of town centre

It's
official: the northern end of Todd Mall is definitely intended to be
opened to traffic – two-way – down to The Sails and left into the
eastern end of Parsons Street opening onto Leichardt Terrace. The road
will be narrow, the speed 30kmph, and the footpaths wide; at Parsons
Street on the southern side, as wide as 7.5m.

This will create space for pedestrians, for future al fresco seating
in front of commercial premises, and also for a "bio-diversity
corridor". The idea is to make a connection between the majestic red
river gum, known as the Grandfather Tree or Knowledge Tree, that stands
just west of The Sails, and the Todd River. The bio-diversity will come
from a water feature – a slender stream, fed by periodic flood
irrigation, running the length of the street, and plantings, including
"dancing trees", coolabahs with their writhing limbs, planted in
human-like clusters.  These in turn will attract wildlife, such
birds and butterflies. Pictured: from top

de-cluttering will be a first step to improving this area. • The
Knowledge Tree from Parsons Street west: the works will restore it to
pride of place. • Yeperenye hawkmoths, detail of photograph by Mike Gillam: the moth wings have inspired the design of new shade structures. KIERAN FINNANE reports.

Arts ambush

Curious tourists, mothers with prams and workers on their lunch break
walking down the Todd Mall yesterday were unexpectedly joined by three
silent, bright eyed, pale clothed, ‘other-old-worldly’ strangers.

This was the Post Family performance, the third of the ‘Happenings’
in this year’s Alice Desert Festival. As we all know, the Festival
features a vibrant program celebrating artists, dancers, actors and
musicians from Central Australia – besides a selection of what I’m told
are Australia’s hottest acts. Pictured are The Post Family trying to figure out Todd Mall. Photo by OLIVER ECLIPSE.
