'I saw the bombers'

 

 

On February 19, 1942, Father John McGrath, under strafing fire on Bathurst Island, radioed a warning about a large number of aircraft approaching. RAAF operations thought that the aircraft were probably American P-40s so no immediate action was taken. Japanese began bombing Darwin some 20 minutes later. By JOHN P McD SMITH.
