Nine youths were taken into police custody in relation to a rock throwing incident in Alice Springs in the night from Monday to Tuesday this week.

Around 8:30pm police received two separate reports of a group of youth throwing rocks at passing motorists on the North Stuart Highway, according to a police report.

It is alleged a female motorcyclist was struck on the leg by a rock, and a 19 year-old male passenger sustained minor injuries after two rocks shattered the front windscreen of the vehicle he was travelling in.

The group was located shortly after by officers from the Youth Engagement Team, and taken to the Alice Springs watch house.

Six youths were under the age of 10, and transported back into the care of family and two boys aged 11 and 13, and a 12-year-old female were issued with Youth Diversion written warnings.

“Parents and carers have a duty of care to ensure their children are being effectively supervised at all times, these children should have been at home with their families,” said Superintendent Pauline Vicary

  1. “Youth Diversion written warnings” – is just another term for slap on the wrist and absolutely nothing will change.

  2. Lock them up. Why just give them diversion. Someone will be killed by these young kids soon.
This is where money needs to be sent in Alice Springs. Crime is out of control and no one has the right answers.
If they do the crime … they do the time.

  3. Shay, not even a slap on the wrist!
A warning basically means the individual now has immunity for the crimes committed, even if fully confessed to. As such it is a gift, enshrined in law that protects the youth from both criminal AND civil proceedings! The victims in this instance now have NO legal recourse against the perpetrators.
    • If a youth is diverted in relation to an offence and the diversion is completed to the satisfaction of a police officer, no criminal investigation or criminal legal proceedings can be commenced or continued against the youth in respect of the offence.
    • Any admission made or information given by a youth during the course of diversion in relation to an offence is not admissible in any subsequent criminal or civil proceedings in relation to the offence.
Further more, there are no reviews, appeals or consequences for a youth who did not satisfactorily “complete a diversion”.
    (1) A decision:
    (a) to divert or not to divert a youth; or
    (b) that a youth did or did not complete a diversion satisfactorily,
cannot be reviewed or appealed against in any court or tribunal.
Evidently, throwing rocks, potentially risking the death of motorist and in this instance causing injury to a person is not a “serious offense”.

  4. I have suffered relentless anxiety and some financial loss.
This morning I woke up to another smashed side vehicl window which is the third one this year.
Surely Satan’s wicked system of things is close to ending.
