Sir – The Ghan will become Australia’s the longest passenger train in more than a decade this Sunday, when it pulls 44 carriages from Adelaide to Darwin.

The famous train will leave Adelaide on 22 May with two locomotives, 22 guest carriages and 11 restaurant and lounge carriages, along with extra carriages for crew and baggage. In total, the train will stretch more than kilometre (1,096 metres) – 200m longer than the standard Ghan train.

Its three-day, two-night journey will see the huge train travel 2,972km from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin, via Alice Springs.

The Ghan has enjoyed a surge in customer demand over the past 12 months thanks to our all-inclusive fares and new tour options in Alice Springs and Katherine.

Sunday’s service will be the longest passenger train seen in Australia since The Ghan’s inaugural Adelaide-Darwin journey in 2004.
