It’s the opposite to how it often is in life: In karting if you stay in front, you stay clean.

The 2013 Australian Dirt Karting Titles roared into Alice Springs today, with 343 karts competing for 13 first, seconds and thirds at the Arunga park track.

They come from four states NT, SA, WA and Queensland – including one from Weipa, the nation’s north-eastern most point. The winners will be known on Sunday.

The last titles here, in 1999, attracted just 190 karts: “We’re stoked with the crowd,” says organiser Jamie DeBrenni.

Admission is free and the event is billed as a great family day. – Erwin Chlanda.
